The Team at Precision Engineer realised that drill holding on none VDI CNC lathes have many shortcomings. As a result we have evolved the Cooldrill design to correct problems associated with normal drill & boring bar holders. We discovered that we have a unique design and are now manufacturing Cooldrill offering an inexpensive route to reduce costs and increase profitability . Cooldrill simply uses ER collets to adjust for drill or boring bar diameters . Coolant is then directed through the collet and pressurised. The whole assembly sits flush in the turret bore to give maximum clearance against the jaws. This has many advantages including :-
1) It has a very swift set up and toolchange times with a 10 second drill change time to a stop so the tool length offset remains unchanged. 2) Reduces the number of expensive collisions because the whole assembly sits flush in the turret bore behind the parting and facing tools which is especially usefully when machining a work piece of a similar dia to the chuck. 3) Coolant problems with long drills are avoided by the flood coolant all round the drill 4) Range from 3mm to 16 mm using double ER collets in a 40mm dia Turret bore 5) A reduction in tooling costs by avoiding using expensive through coolant drills. Instead, we always use cobalt drills manufactured by Euro pa therefore reducing our tool stocks. In summary, Cooldrill has been designed typically for a small machine shop such as Cooper Engineering that requires a reliable system with much reduced tool inventory costs. It is also time efficient as it frees up machinists time from altering drills and sockets while the machine is at a standstill, allowing for faster set ups and pre-changeover organisation of tools. A leading Lathe Manufacture has confirmed that only 5% of new 2 axis machines are sold with VDI turrets .While in reality most old machines would have normal turrets with the majority of external cutting tools never being removed from the turret. Cooldrill can save the expense of a VDI turret .
